We Ran a Test: Influencers vs UGC. Here’s What Converted Best.
· Owen
Same week, same app. We paid an influencer $1,500 flat and ran a UGC creator on a $2 CPM deal. One got 5x the views. The other made more money. Here are the real numbers.

Every founder eventually asks the same question: should I spend on influencers, or build with UGC creators? Everyone has an opinion and almost nobody has receipts.
We ended up running the cleanest test you could ask for, because in the same week, on the same app, we had an organic UGC creator and a paid niche influencer go live. We published the full numbers on both: the UGC story and the influencer story. This is the head-to-head.
The tale of the tape
| Josh (UGC) | Briar (influencer) | |
|---|---|---|
| Deal | $2 CPM performance | $1,500 flat |
| Total paid | ~$1,000 | $1,500 |
| Followers | 19.4K | 105K |
| Organic views | 541K | 105K |
| Payers per 1,000 views | 0.2 to 0.4 | ~0.9 |
| Install-to-paid, peak days | 2 to 5% | 9 to 11% |
| The encore | 709K views on day 97 | Second video, same price |

What the UGC creator gave us
Josh had 19,400 followers and a performance deal: $2 per thousand views, capped. The month cost us about $1,000 total, and his day 4 video did 541,000 views, because the algorithm pushes great videos no matter how small the account is. We only paid for views he actually delivered, so his win was our win. He drove the biggest install days in the app's history, and then he did it again with 709,000 views on day 97.
UGC is how you buy reach. You can't plan any one video going viral, but with enough great creators posting, the odds start working for you.
What the influencer gave us
Briar is a short-form strategist with 105,000 followers who trust him professionally. His video did a fifth of Josh's views, and those views converted like nothing we've ever run. 9.5% of the installs in his first 48 hours became paying subscribers, while the rest of January converted at 4.6%. His $1,500 fee was paid back 2.2x by the first day's cohort alone, and it's projected to hit 4.5x over that cohort's lifetime.
An influencer in your niche is how you buy conversion. Fewer views, each worth a lot more, at a price you can plan and repeat.
The honest part
The two overlapped for a week, so perfect attribution is impossible. Every number above is cut conservatively, and the chart attributes the overlap in both directions. The conversion gap is bigger than any attribution error.
And look at what the overlap produced: 9,395 new users in January, three times the month before. $24,012 in revenue, our biggest month ever. A launch cohort that has paid $18,000 and counting. Running both lanes in the same week didn't split the results, it multiplied them.
So which one wins?
Josh got more views. Briar made us more money.
The plainest way to see it: the seven days before Briar's post, our viral traffic brought 2,943 installs, and 95 of them became paying subscribers. The five days after his post brought 2,067 installs, and 207 became paying subscribers. Fewer installs and more than double the payers, on the same app, with the same paywall, in the same week.
The money says the same thing:
- Briar cost $1,500. The subscribers from just his first 48 hours have paid $5,758 so far, heading for about $6,700. That's around 4x his invoice from two days of traffic.
- Josh cost about $1,000 and delivered 541,000 views that kept the funnel full. His traffic converted at 2 to 5 percent, so it made real money too, just spread across a much bigger crowd.
- Together they closed January at $24,012, the biggest month in the app's history.
Would we do it again? Both, and we already have, because we booked Briar's second video. But if you make us rank them, the influencer made more money per dollar, and it wasn't close.
The thing that mattered in both lanes was creator quality. Josh was trained. Briar is a professional. The power law kills average content in both lanes, and it pays great creators in both.
Which one should you pick?
It comes down to your budget.
If you're just starting out, run performance deals. You put almost nothing down and you only pay for views that actually happen. Our deal with Josh was $2 per thousand views, capped, so about $1,000 bought us 541,000 views and the biggest install days in our history. Work with the right creators on performance terms and you can print money the way we did. The catch is the words "right creators," because average creators on performance terms just produce nothing.
If you have real budget, run influencers in your niche. If you know the voices your customers trust, or you're willing to DM them and build the relationship, a niche influencer is the strongest converting channel there is. Briar's traffic converted at double our monthly average. And flat fees are negotiable, so build the relationship, work the price down, and book packages instead of one-offs. Every dollar you knock off the fee goes straight to your return.
Most brands should do both, in that order. Start on performance to find your message cheaply, then put flat-fee money behind the niche voices that convert. That combination broke every record we had in January.
The part where we tell you what we built
Finding the Joshes and Briars of your niche is the whole game, and that's what Artec does:
- The creators. 900+ trained through our Content Economy community and filtered by a viral predictor trained on 60,000 videos.
- The briefs. Artec writes your campaign briefs, so every creator starts with a winning angle instead of a guess.
- The strategy. The same content strategy that took our own app viral, handed to the creators working your campaign.
- The intelligence. Artec shows you what's working for your competitors before you spend a dollar.
- The autopilot. Artec's agent finds and hires creators in your niche for you. You set the goal and it builds the roster.
One week and two great creators broke every record we had. Now imagine that running every week, on autopilot.
Here's the whole motion, three steps:
- Sign up for Artec
- Pick your plan
